Follow the Crowd?

In today's society, we're encouraged to be ourselves and stand out. We're constantly being told that being unique is a good thing and that we should be different. In school, we are taught to be individuals and supported to not make decisions influenced by our peers, but rather by our own minds. Our teachers constantly remind us of this and yet, do we listen? No, we don't.
Most of our decisions are based around what the majority of our friends want. For instance, sporting choices. You're dying to do tennis, but all your other friends are doing oz tag. What choice are you going to put down as your choice? 2% of us would put down 'tennis'. The remaining 98% however, will put down 'oz tag'. Who would want to do sports alone while all your other friends are doing the same sport? '
We'll always follow the majority - it's human nature. We'd always have this need, this want, to follow what everyone is doing. This can be seen highly through fashion. The fashion world is all about following what everyone else is wearing just because it's popular. Usually, if you're not wearing the latest trend, but wearing something of 'last year', you're usually looked down upon by people who follow the 'latest' fashion. Is our nature restricting us of becoming unique individuals with our own sense of style?
After realising about this whole 'following the crowd' thing, I've been wondering - is there a limit? Like, is there a limit where following people should stop and you should go your own way? Don't famous people get sick and tired of the publick constantly mimicking their trends? Everytime a celebrity comes out wearing something new, a replica of the clothing would be made public and customers would flock to buy it. If a celebrity has a new hairdo, many of the public would strive to copy it. If a celebrity reveals they like a particular band, many of us would listen to them and like it.  asdhshfsaf isn't it annoying?!
